The two staffs worked out of different offices, in different buildings.Īlong with the freedom given to them by the management of Al-Masry Al-Youm, the English edition was relatively undisturbed by the state. “Management had the idea that they should be on the Web, and followed that.” The filtered coffee favored by the English-edition staff became a symbol of a spoiled lifestyle full of Western luxuries. “It was not a byproduct of some convergence of ideas,” Attalah told me. The staff, all new, were mostly young and from tech or blogging backgrounds. In spite of the shared name, and occasional shared content, the two branches of Al-Masry Al-Youm operated separately from the beginning. The vetoing of Springborg’s article was the first time Galad has ever had editorial input in the English edition. It was not so much solidarity as good business sense accusing Al-Masry Al-Youm English edition of a having a foreign agenda would be to tarnish his own brand. I think of myself as equal to them, even superior, most of the time,” Galad writes.) But, while Galad accuses the English-edition staff of carelessness-of being “bedazzled by the lights of the West”-he does not align their deeds with Egypt’s foreign attackers, nor does he mention the number of non-Egyptian staff at the English edition. (“Springborg and those backing him are unfortunately faced with a man who cannot be blackmailed, who is not West-struck or ultra-impressed by the Western press. It is no longer possible to control the dissemination of information in the same way, Springborg argues, “One lesson of the Arab Spring is that news now travels very fast indeed.”Ī second editorial, published Monday in the Arabic edition, and signed by Galad, takes an embarrassing, posturing, petty tone that can only erode his credibility as an editor. He points out that pursuing censorship does little for the ruling SCAF than make it appear old-fashioned and fearful. Springborg discussed the incident himself and shared his comments from the original piece-coup and all- on the Web site of Foreign Policy. The details have now been reported inside of Egypt and abroad, on the Web site of Al-Masry Al-Youm (where the entire issue can be downloaded, though in its edited form) and in the British newspaper The Independent. Naval Postgraduate School, and his piece, an opinion column, was called “Is Field Marshal Tantawi reading the public’s pulse correctly?” The issue seemed not to be with the total content of the piece, but, Attalah said, the last two paragraphs and specifically the use of the word “coup.” Attalah and Springborg agreed to revise the piece, omitting that word. The author was Robert Springborg, a professor at the U.S. ( Al-Ahram wins in the first category.) Buoyed by the success of the first edition, the staff started working on a second called “First there was a revolution…” It included a piece on whether or not high voter turnout was helping to redeem the image of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces, an article on secularism at the polls, and a review of a new restaurant serving Swedish meatballs near Tahrir Square.īut on the eve of publication, the editor-in-chief of Al-Masry Al-Youm, Magdy Galad (who also has his own television show and, some say, political ambitions and ties to the military), voiced concern over an opinion piece. With a readership of at least two hundred thousand, the Arabic edition is the second-most popular newspaper, and the most popular independent newspaper, in Egypt. While they waited for a license, they decided to distribute the Egypt Independent as an insert in the Arabic edition of Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Both apps also let you schedule backups to run unattended-on a recurring schedule, when the destination drive is mounted, or both. Likewise, you can use either app to restore a drive from a disk image. Carbon Copy Cloner also offers encryption for disk images, while SuperDuper lets you choose from three levels of compression. In addition to using an actual drive as the destination, each app can copy the source volume to a disk image (which won’t itself be bootable, but which can be restored to a drive that will then become bootable) you can choose from among several disk-image formats, with or without compression. (The free trial version of SuperDuper disables the incremental update feature, which Shirt Pocket calls Smart Update.) Both also let you deselect specific files, folders, or filename patterns to omit them from your backup, although they have very different interfaces for doing so-I find this task much easier to accomplish in Carbon Copy Cloner than in SuperDuper. Each utility provides a plain-English summary of what’s about to happen you then click a button to begin the copying operation.īoth apps give you the option to erase the destination before copying files from the source or to update your clone incrementally to reflect only those files that are new, changed, or deleted since the previous cloning run. In both apps, you choose a source drive (say, your startup volume) from a pop-up menu on the left, a destination drive (your clone-backup volume) from a pop-up menu on the right, and any desired options using additional pop-up menus or buttons. Each has a long history, focuses on cloning, presents a simple and clear user interface, and includes unusual features that make it an especially good choice for creating and maintaining bootable duplicates.įor everyday cloning tasks, SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are equally good in almost every respect, and they have a core set of features in common. Most of these apps and processes do an entirely respectable job, but two cloning utilities-Shirt Pocket’s $28 SuperDuper and Bombich Software’s $40 Carbon Copy Cloner-stand above the rest. Online appendix to my book Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac.) It’s also possible (if not especially convenient) to clone a drive using Disk Utility or by using the diskutil command in Terminal. More than two dozen third-party backup apps can make bootable duplicates. What makes a volume bootable?) All this is best done with a utility designed expressly for cloning. (For more details, read Mike Bombich’s article And, crucially, the System folder (/System) on the backup drive must be “blessed,” which entails recording its physical location on the drive in a special portion of the drive’s hidden HFS Volume Header. Symbolic links (Unix-based file references that function like Mac aliases) must be recreated correctly. Every file on your drive-including thousands of hidden files-must be copied just so, with permissions and other metadata intact. Unfortunately, you can’t make a clone merely by copying files from your startup volume to an external drive in the Finder. OS X Recovery features include Disk Utility, but sometimes you need a drive-repair app with more oomph.) Finally, having a clone is essential when upgrading to a new version of OS X, because it gives you the option to easily revert to your previous system (by erasing your upgraded-OS drive and then restoring from the clone) if compatibility problems arise. By contrast, even though Time Machine also backs up every file on your drive, restoring all those files to a new drive takes hours (or possibly days) restoring an entire drive from an online backup service takes even longer.Ī clone also comes in handy for troubleshooting, because you can use it to run third-party utilities on your ailing drive. A few moments later, you’re back up and running-and you can then repair (or replace) your main startup drive more or less at your leisure. You simply attach your clone drive, restart while holding down the Option key, select the clone drive in OS X’s Startup Manager, and press Return. What a clone offers that the likes of Time Machine and CrashPlan do not is immediate recovery: You can get back to work almost instantly after a drive crash or other severe problem with your startup volume. The transitions in Phaedra truly show how much Tangerine Dream have developed since their often inharmonious prior works.Īs the bass melts away, eerie moog synthesizer noises roll in and transform into a familiar slowly ascending movement. The flow between the passages is spectacular, having a seamless transition between bass and synthesizer. As the passage builds up, so do the sweeping synth noises that somehow flow into a precipitated passage of rapid bass noise. The first passage in Phaedra lasts about 4 minutes long with sweeping solar wind like swoops and a continuous moog synthesizer sound that cautiously builds up and creates a trance-inducing effect. Phaedra essentially fits into the progressive and ambient genres. The equipment that they were using was so experimental and shoddy, that with any slight change in temperature the equipment’s oscillators would flux. Even though the track was ridden with technical errors, Edgar Froese and crew left it pretty much as it was, only adding a few extra synth layers in parts of the song. Phaedra actually occurred by mistake, the band were experimenting with their new synthesizers and sequencers, just as the tape happened to be rolling. Their music no longer detailed journeys through space it explored the emotions of those journeys.Īlthough it would be impossible to infer any references to the ancient Greek mythological figure Phaedra, it is a track that can be satisfying no matter what state or mood you are in. But with experience and chemistry together, Tangerine Dream were now able to translate their ideas into sound with far more poise and control. Their days of experimentation were not behind them when creating Phaedra, with experimentation still being key in the bands vision. Phaedra offers a more refined experience, a cerebral journey through sounds, genres and worlds. At times it showed glimpses of mesmerising soundscapes and ideas, yet too often these moments were then followed up by uncaptivating segments. Alpha Centauri for example felt like a rough and cut up journey, never quite flowing as it should. They were by no means bad albums they just fell short in a number of areas, with Tangerine Dreams technical prowess and knowledge not able to match their dreams. As such Tangerine Dreams’ first 4 albums that predated Phaedra lacked a concise vision. One of the problems that Froese, Baumann and Franke faced when creating their early albums was that they really had no one to lead them. It is easy to see why this is often the most heralded Tangerine Dream lineup, with much of Tangerine Dream’s best work being created by the trio. The line-up for Phaedra was Edgar Froese, Peter Baumann and Christopher Franke. It is clear however, where Phaedra falls on that line between genius and insanity. In their 40 years of existence, Tangerine Dream has made around 100 albums, sometimes missing horribly and at times verging on genius. Edgar Froese the founding member of Tangerine Dream is the only person who has remained in the band for a lengthy period of time. The band has gone through dozens of line up changes and over 15 members. Tangerine Dream has certainly proved their longevity, in some ways. The sounds within the album may not reflect what artists are capable of producing today, yet the foundations of modern electronic music can be seen in the work of artists like Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. Rather a unique voyage of sound and art, that is still as influential today as it was back in the 70s. Even though electronic music was in its infancy, Phaedra was not just a collection of beeps and whirrs much like the sounds found in old Microsoft 3.1x computers. Albums featuring synthesizers even predated that in the 1960s. Phaedra was the first ever commercial album to feature sequencers, all the way back in 1974. Much to the dismay of parents who dismiss this music and reminisce about the good old days of Van Morrison and The Beatles, electronic music was in strong force even then. Today, many people see electronic music as something that sprung up in the 90s, created by some high on crack elitist youths with top end computers. After spending a year testing over 25 electric razors spanning all the top-reviewed brands (Braun, Gillette, and Panasonic among them), we were able to narrow this down to the seven absolute best electric shavers worth spending your hard-earned money on. The good news is that no matter what your budget, skin or hair type, or grooming acumen, there's an electric razor that will suit your lifestyle. No matter your reason for using an electric razor, the biggest thing is finding the right one. Plus, and this is a big plus, a single electric razor can replace your entire shaving routine and declutter your bathroom shelf-who doesn’t like that extra space? Many can be used in or out of the shower, with or without shaving cream, and even on other parts of your body like your head or below the neck. Electric razors are also easy to travel with (no extra products!), intuitive to use (especially newer versions that incorporate sensing technology and even AI), and less expensive in the long run. Like me, it could be the razor bump issue. If you plan on stashing one of these in your Dopp when you travel, portability should be high on your list of priorities as well there's no point investing in a nifty new tool if it's too damn big to tote around when you need it most. There are many reasons a guy might switch to an electric razor. This one's easy: most of the same features you’d consider when buying any grooming device-cutting power, ease-of-use, battery life-are key here too, though ergonomics factor heavily into the equation (and safety-enhancing features like extra-fine blades and wet-dry capabilities for a quick clean should be a prerequisite, too). What we're trying to say is: yes, you really do need one, no matter what type of awkward, halfhearted assurances you’ve heard in the past. (Just ask de Bergerac! ) So don't rely on the perceptive ability of your friends/family/closest Zoom confidants-seize the initiative yourself. Unlike, say, a brand new set of whiskers or an unruly pair of sideburns, they're not all that noticeable until, suddenly, they really are soliciting an honest opinion about the state of your schnoz is a surefire way to catalyze an uncomfortable bout of hem-hawing from everyone within a few-mile radius. They're also especially important to pay attention to yourself because, well, they're extremely awkward for anyone else to bring up. We're all friends here, so we're going to level with you: even if your default look is “rakishly unkempt," errant nostril hairs are never a great look. The Best Nose Hair Scissors: Seki Edge nostril scissors, $17.The Best Multi-Purpose Trimmer: Philips Norelco trimmer, $20.The Best Errant Hair Snipper: MicroTouch Titanium MAX trimmer, $15.The Best Grooming Device with a Nose Hair Trimmer Attachment: Panasonic Ultimate All-in-One Kit, $170.The Best Budget Trimmer: Wahl micro groomsman personal pen trimmer, $10.The Best Deep-Canal Trimmer: Wahl trimmer, $15.The Best Manual Nose Hair Trimmer: Tweezerman nose hair trimmer, $15.The Best Overall Nose Hair Trimmer: Panasonic Ear and Nose Hair Trimmer, $45.Sticking just anything else in there is ill-advised at best, and downright dangerous at worse. (Never mind trying to wedge some scissors up there.) To properly tame any errant nose and ear hairs, you're going to want a machine specifically designed to get up in the contours of your nostrils. The shaver you use to tame your facial hair isn’t going to cut it-nor will the clippers you rely on for at-home touch-ups. Which means it's worth picking up a dedicated gadget to do the job. A good nose and ear hair trimmer will cut your hairs down to one standard length, keeping them well out of view while still in prime functioning and filtering condition. You don't want to go scorched earth and simply pluck them into oblivion. Namely, filtering out all the dirt and dust in the air you inhale every day, so you're not just sucking grime into your lungs. But there's a really good reason to avoid plucking your way to a well-groomed schnoz: your nostril hairs serve a distinct purpose. It might seem like even the best nose hair trimmer is a needless indulgence for anyone who already owns tweezers. The strike officially got under way in October, with some 8,400 workers leaving mines across the state. They wanted wages upped from about $6 to $7.50 per day, employment of union check weigh men (who verified each miner’s tonnage, which figured into how much they were paid), and the recognition of pit committees (groups of employer and worker representatives who dealt with labor problems at mines). Mine owners and state officials retaliated by firing some of the solidarity strikers and closing common meeting grounds for miners, such as pool halls.ĭespite those measures, in early September IWW leaders met in Aguilar, in southern Colorado, to finalize demands for a strike. Some 10,000 responded in a daylong walkout, indicating that conditions were ripe for further union activity in the state. In response, the IWW-made up of immigrant workers from dozens of nations-urged coal miners in Colorado to go on a strike in solidarity with Sacco and Vanzetti. On August 23, two Italian immigrants and anarchists, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were wrongfully executed for murder in Massachusetts. In 1927 the catalyst for union activity in Colorado actually came from far beyond the state’s borders. In 1919, for instance, famous IWW leader William “Big Bill” Haywood was jailed along with several other union leaders these actions, however, only resulted in other members stepping into the leadership void. This position made the union a major target of local newspapers and state officials during the late 1910s and 1920s, when anti-Communist sentiment ran rampant across the country. In its place came a more radical union, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), whose members were known as “Wobblies” and explicitly embraced Communism. The UMWA largely withdrew from Colorado by the 1920s after its lack of success in the previous decade. At Ludlow in 1914, workers were represented by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). Given the slew of accidents, injuries, and deaths at the state’s coal mines, it is no wonder that many miners turned to unions to advocate for better working conditions in the early twentieth century. If this was not done properly, explosions could occur, such as when the Jokerville Mine exploded near Crested Butte in 1884 or when the Vulcan Mine in Garfield County blew up three times between 18. Flammable methane gas released from coal beds often built up in the mines, and each morning an inspector had to check the air quality before work could begin. They inhaled coal dust all day long, which led to the devastating respiratory disease known as black lung. Even in the 1920s, after decades of labor activism had resulted in some gains for workers, coal miners still worked up to twelve hours a day, six days a week. Working in coal mines was dirty and dangerous. Unlike coal operations in the eastern United States, coal mining in Colorado was dominated by only a handful of large companies, with the two most prominent being Colorado Fuel & Iron and the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company. Coal also heated hundreds of homes in cities such as Denver. It underwrote the entire industrial economy, from gold mining and smelting to construction and railroads. Mining in Colorado is often associated with precious metals such as gold and silver, but by the late nineteenth century, coal had become the state’s most important commodity. The Columbine Massacre showed that little had changed in Colorado in terms of relations between workers and companies, as well as between labor and the state, in the thirteen years since the Ludlow Massacre, the deadliest labor conflict in state history. On November 21, 1927, members of a Colorado militia fired into a crowd of hundreds of striking miners in the Weld County town of Serene, killing six and wounding twenty. There are some conventional submarines capable of traveling at great distances, but none can compete with their underwater endurance. Nuclear submarines can be submerged for three to four months at a time, making them capable of crossing oceans quickly and easily. It was a historic day when the record was broken, with the modern submarine Victor Vescovo now carrying the title of world’s oldest submarine. This record was established during the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench during the Trieste submarine’s voyage. The submarine’s test depths were 5,000 feet or 1,524 meters, with an average speed of 4 knots and maximum depth of 4kts. Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs) are a type of submarine not commonly used. They are capable of performing a wide range of missions, including open ocean missions and naval operations such as anti-submarine warfare.ĭeep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs) are used by the military to perform underwater search and rescue operations. The submarines are quieter, more powerful, and faster than other types of submarines. In 1983, the Seawolf Class Submarines, abbreviated as SSN, were launched to replace the Los Angeles Class Submarines. The U.S Navy’s submarine fleet includes four types of vessels: the Los Angeles class, the Ohio class, the Seawolf class, and the Virginia class. The deepest they can go in the ocean is over 600 feet. This type of submarine is made up of several different types (or classes). The vast majority of the world’s oceans are only a few thousand meters deep, so nuclear submarines can access almost 95% of the ocean’s floor.Ī submarine is a vehicle that can travel deep beneath the surface. While the depths that nuclear submarines can reach are impressive, it is important to remember that they are designed to operate primarily in shallower waters. At that depth, the water pressure is about 600 times that at sea level. The deepest- diving submarine on record is the Russian submersible MIR-1, which reached a depth of 6,000 meters in the Mariana Trench in 1989. Some submarines, however, are capable of going even deeper. Most nuclear submarines are designed to operate at depths of up to 1,000 meters, which is about three times the depth of the average ocean. But just how deep do these submarines go? The answer is: pretty deep. They are also some of the most secretive, as their operations are usually kept hidden from the public. Nuclear submarines are some of the most advanced and powerful machines ever created. Kermit demonstrated how eager society is to let go of its frustrations, and how willing we are online to help. Social media has made it possible to slander others for likes. This made you either a coward or a bad friend. Before social media, people used to vent their frustrations face-to-face or behind the back of another party. Kermit is a great example of how social media has transformed society’s tendency to publicly criticize others. However, people are now able to discuss their criticisms of other people. Since humans are naturally critical, it’s been known for a long time that people have their own opinions on the actions of others. However, I’m left to wonder if Kermit and the unquenchable thirst he has for savagery reveal anything about our society. This simple rule has produced countless memes and tons of advertising for Lipton. These images either show Kermit drinking Lipton tea or Kermit sitting at a table with a glass. The meme gained its own identity when the majority of memesters, which is the official term, started using one of these images. This meme is unique because they all start with one party being exposed for some terrible action, followed by Kermit’s admission that it wasn’t his business. But what happened after it was created was a meme that reached epic proportions (which is also my business). Who was the original to use the now-famous punchline? That’s not my business. They also did not have a common image, and were therefore overtaken by the more recent memes. These memes were not as universally popular as the later versions. They often featured Kermit riding in a car. These memes were more situational and described awkward situations or situations in which one party feels bitter. These memes were unique in that they did not include the punchline “but that’s no of my business.” However, they were still funny and had their own theme. The first Kermit memes were very popular. In the first months of 2014, the original meme started appearing. Kermit (the meme) did not actually begin in his final form. What happened when our green puppet became the authority on ethics and morality? The Anchorman said it best: “That escalated quickly.” The Kermit meme soon called out almost everyone for almost any reason, but that was “none of his business cards tomorrow.” These jokes made fun of some of the most bizarre and questionable behavior in society. Kermit the Frog had overtaken social media, and he wasn’t the playful Muppet. This little green amphibian helped make it possible. The internet was seemingly in decline at the start of 2014. It’s up to you whether you like it or you don’t, but it’s not mine! “But that’s None of my Business Meme” Kermit’s ‘none my business’ meme was definitely a popular meme and my personal favourite. Although the meme was popular for a brief time, it eventually died. The photo below shows him wearing the hat as a message to those who thought he couldn’t beat the Golden State Warriors, who at that time were considered the best basketball team. The meme returned to popularity when Lebron James, who won the NBA championship in June 2016, wore the hat featuring Kermit the Frog on it. The meme’s popularity was declining by 2015 and it looked like it would be a forgotten meme in the meme hall-of-fame (if one exists). It was a meme mocking people who wore fake Jordan’s shoes The first post was a picture of Kermit sipping iced tea. The tumblr blog Kermit the Snitch was created two days later. These hashtags were both used 19 000 and 11 000 times in four days, respectively. Twitter users started using Kermit and None of my Business Meme hashtags in tweets. Kermit’s popularity wasn’t just limited to Instagram. Within four days, the page had attained over 130,000 followers. The caption of this page featured Kermit’s photos with the statement “that’s no of my business”. The meme really began to gain popularity on June 20th, 2014 when the Instagram page was made. It was uploaded by kermitbelike to Instagram as a meme mocking “ratchet” women (shown here). On June 17, 2014, Kermit’s first use of the phrase “that’s none of mine business trip cheaters” was in conjunction with an image of Kermit. The meme’s origins can be traced back in January 2014, when Instagram users used Kermit images and the hashtag #kermit memes. This expression is often used to make sarcastic remarks about someone or to insult them. The most well-known meme is the “But that’s not my roofing business cards” one. Kermit has been a frequent character in Internet memes over the past few years. The Muppets and Sesame Street have made Kermit a household name. None of my Business Meme Kermit the Frog is a puppet character of frogs that first appeared on television in 1955, on Sam and Friends. How to Avoid Garden Pests & Disease, Organically (VIDEO) Supplementing Hummingbird Nectar Is Risky Business How to Attract Beneficial Insects and Repel Pests Through Garden Design Therefore, it concludes that “If we wanted to duplicate the sugar content of flowers in our feeders, we would use a recipe of 1 C sucrose : 3 C water, which results in a sucrose concentration of 22.5% (w/w).” The article mentions that several published studies have found that the sucrose concentration of the nectar in hummingbird flowers is 23.9%. Using this same solid+liquid methodology, the 1:3 sugar-to-water ratio produces a sucrose concentration of 22.5%. Using the proper solid+liquid formula, the 1:4 sucrose-to-water ratio actually produces a sucrose concentration of 17.9%. I’ll answer them to the best of my ability.
